Dispersant Preparation for Particle Size Analysis

Dispersant Preparation for Particle Size Analysis (PSA)

Environmental Soils and Biogeochemistry Characterization Laboratory

July 3, 2009

Reagents

  • Sodium hexametaphosphate ((NaPO3)6), reagent grade
  • Sodium carbonate (Na2CO3), reagent grade
  • Dissolve 35.7 g of (NaPO3)6 and 7.94 g of Na2CO3 in 1 L of reverse osmoses water.

Place the sample in a horizontal shaker set at 120 oscillations min-1 and shake for 15 h (overnight).

Subtract the weight of the sodium hexametaphosphate (Oven Dry Weight) that is contained in the extracted aliquot from a blank prepared with each PSA from the silt and clay weights to calculate silt and clay percentages.
